MANILA, Philippines – The planned megabout between Manny Pacquiao and Briton Ricky Hatton returns to the negotiating table after the Filipino boxing icon rejected the 50-50 revenue split.
So how much is Manny Pacquiao really worth?
If you ask Pacquiao himself, he's worth more than 50-50 and believes he should get a larger chunk of the proceeds of the planned match between two of boxing’s biggest superstars.
Pacquiao’s camp believes the current pound-for-pound king should get a 60-40 share for being the boxing world’s biggest crowd drawer, especially in terms of pay-per-view shares.
But Arum and Hatton’s team, led by Golden Boy Promotions chief executive officer Richard Schaefer, believes both fighters should be on equal footing since the reigning International Boxing Organization (IBO) also enjoys a cult following, especially after compiling 46 straight wins before losing to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in their World Boxing Council welterweight title match on Dec. 8, 2007.
Hatton’s camp said they have already reached an agreement, though only orally, with Arum about the 50-50 revenue split.
Now Pacquiao, who's not budging from his earlier pronouncements of getting more than 50 percent of the revenue share, is threatening to pull out of his proposed fight against Hatton.
Pacquiao’s camp says if negotiations drag on they would be forced to shop around for a new challenger.
They are even contemplating of opening talks with the group of Mayweather, who retired after scoring a 10th round technical knockout against Hatton.
Arum, however, remains hopeful that the planned superfight between Pacquiao and Hatton on May 2 will still push through. He says that he will do what he can to make both camps agree on the 50-50 revenue split.
"This is the biggest fight out there for both of them and we have to find a solution and make the fight happen. Again, I’m very optimistic that we will find that solution," Arum said. – GMANews.TV
